Leonard Cohen on Writers

If it is your destiny to be this laborer called a “writer,” you know you’ve got to go to work every day, but you also know that you’re not going to get it every day. You have to prepare, but you really don’t command the enterprise.

(from Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man, thank you Netflix.)

Two things I got from this quote:

  • The longer it takes songwriters to put out collections of songs, commonly referred to as albums, the more “highly anticipated” it becomes. Website copywriting, however, is all about the quick turnaround. In importance, quality comes in a far second to speed. Though, not all songs are the same quality either. Watching the Disney Channel for any length of time has taught me that you can write a song about anything. Even “Squirrels in My Pants” will make sense if you put it to a catchy tune. Squirrels! Squirrels!
  • Do you suppose that phrase “command the enterprise” is where the writers of the original Star Trek series got the idea to name the starship? Wait…the phrase DID exist before the series, right? Mad internet searches are yielding zero results. I believe my respect has just been renewed for Mr. Cohen.
